Turner Erupts as WestConn Rallies Past USM, 72-64

DANBURY, Conn. - Senior guard Matthew Turner (Trumbull, Conn.) erupted with a flurry of late three-pointers to lead the Western Connecticut State University to a thrilling comeback win over visiting league foe Southern Maine, 72-64, on Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena. He finished with game-highs of 22 points and 11 rebounds, while junior forward Jaheim Young (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 13 first half points.

Southern Maine had an equally impressive shooting performance from sophomore guard Simon Chadbourne (Westbrook, ME) as he poured in 15 points off five trifectas off the bench. Sophomore guard Trevor Ward (West Park, FL) and junior forward Marcus Christopher (Skowhegan, ME) joined him in doubles figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

It seemed like the contest was heading towards yet another epic overtime battle as the game was knotted 35-35 at the break. Nearly every statistical column was identical at halftime. The Huskies won a double overtime matchup over WCSU earlier this month.

The visitors broke away midway through the second stanza, seizing a 52-41 advantage when Chadbourne drilled a corner shot from beyond the arc. The would maintain the 11-point gap when Chadbourne connected on another shot from downtown with 6:31 remaining to make it 61-50.

Still trailing 64-53 with 5:19 left, WestConn surged to life. They put together a 19-0 barrage to complete the massive rally. Senior guard Wes Nelson (Queens, N.Y.) sparked the comeback with a pair of free throws.

It was the Turner show from that point on. He erupted to drain four straights shots from three-point range, giving WestConn a 69-64 lead. The squad hit 3-of-3 shots from the line to cement the nailbiting win.

The contest also marked Senior Day for Turner, Nelson and classmate guard Ahmod Privott (Middletown, Conn.) - who tacked on six points, six boards and five assists. With the win, WestConn improved to 13-11 overall and 7-9 in Little East Conference play, while the Huskies dropped to 9-16 and 4-12.

WestConn will await the results of today's other games to see their final seeding in the upcoming LEC Postseason Tournament which is slated to begin on Tuesday.
