Box Score PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Senior forward
Katelyn Fanning (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) scored 18 points and the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team came all the way back from a 15-point second-half deficit only to fall to host Plymouth State University, 61-54 in overtime on Friday afternoon.
Fanning collected a game-second-best 11 rebounds and kept WestConn's hope of a road win over the Panthers alive by connecting on 8-of-10 attempts from the free-throw line.
WestConn, now 7-16 overall, drops to 2-12 in the Little East Conference. It's Little East Conference fate, the eighth seed, was already decided and it will host the Panthers (#9) in the league tournament play-in game on Monday, February 21 at 1 pm. The conference decided weeks ago that all teams would be competing in the LEC post-season tournament, considering all the schedule difficulties during the on-going COVID-19 pandemic. Monday's winner will face Rhode Island College on Tuesday in the LEC quarterfinals.
The Panthers improve to 2-18 on the season and are now 1-14 in the league. Salzillo and J Cook led the winners with 16 and 15 points, respectively.
WestConn took its first lead at the 6:01 mark of the final stanza when
Nicole Vivian (New Milford, Conn.) buried a three-point bucket from beyond the arc, off a feed from Fanning.
The visitor's lead grew to four points, 48-44, when
Ashley Rilley (Orangeburg, N.Y) canned a pair of free throws with 5:42 remaining in regulation.
The Panthers outscored WestConn, 17-6 the rest of the way, including a 10-3 run during the overtime period.
WestConn plays host to University of Southern Maine tomorrow at 1 pm. Prior to the tip-off, WestConn will celebrate the careers of Manning,
Hannah Maghini (Bristol, Conn.) and
Sydney Gouveia (New Fairfield), a senior that last played during the 2019-20 season and whose career was cut short by the pandemic.
