12/9/2022 9:14:00 PM

Box Score JAMAICA, N.Y. - Senior forward Jaheim Young (Brooklyn, N.Y) notched a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds to propel the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball squad to a come-from-behind 63-58 overtime win at non-league foe York College on Friday night.

Junior guard Jalen Jackson (Brick, N.J.) added nine points and six boards, while senior forward Ryan Alkins (Queens, N.Y.) chipped in with eight points and nine off the glass for the visitors.

Olawale Kila paced the Cardinals with game-highs of 16 points and 14 rebounds, while Devine Chisholm knocked in 12 points and handed out four assists.

Both teams struggled offensively most of the night. However, the WestConn bench outscored York's while also racking up points off turnovers.

The visitors trailed much of the first half as they fell behind by as many as nine points. The Wolves got back into it early in the second half before the Cardinals built the advantage back up to nine once again midway thru the stanza.

But WestConn would not go down without a fight. Young nailed a three-pointer from the right wing with under five minutes remaining to give the Wolves their first lead since early in the contest, 52-50. York countered quickly to regain the lead before the Wolves answered with an offensive putback, knotting the count at 54-54 with under a minute to go. The hosts fired a trifecta from the corner at the buzzer but it rattled out, sending the game to the extra session.

WestConn opened overtime with a 7-0 run. Alkins capped the flurry with another offensive rebound and layup to make it 61-54. York cut the deficit to 61-58 but wouldn't get any closer. Alkins then sealed the victory with a pair from the charity stripe to round the count out at 63-58.

With the win, the Wolves improved to 7-0 overall while the Cardinals dropped to 1-9. WestConn will look to continue its stellar start to the campaign when they head to St. Joseph's University Brooklyn on Monday at 7 p.m.
