DANBURY, Conn. - Western Connecticut State University junior guard
Nicole Vivian (New Milford, Conn.) scored a season-high 28 points to lead the Wolves to a 65-54 victory over visiting University of Massachusetts Boston at Feldman Arena on Tuesday night.
Vivian connected on 10-of-15 attempts from the field and 8-of-11 from the charity stripe while also pulling down seven rebounds for the Wolves, which have now won five straight and improve to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the Little East Conference.
Graduate student
Katelyn Fanning (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) added 18 points and hauled in a game-high 10 boards.
The Beacons, now 6-4 overall and 0-2 in the league, were led by Meg Dixon's (Hanover, Mass.) 15 points while Alexah Potter (Manchester, Conn.) added nine points and 10 rebounds for the visitors.
WestConn finished the night with a 42-22 point advantage in the paint but the Beacons' bench outscored the hosts, 39-7.
With 5:37 left in the second quarter, the Wolves held a nine-point advantage, 21-12, following a bucket from Fanning in the lane. Five seconds before the horn sounded for intermission, the Beacons went on a 13-6 run led, 27-25, at the break.
The visitors lead would grow to seven points, 34-27 following a lay in from Sibayla Jensen (Portland, Ore.) at the 8:10 mark of the third stanza.
Vivian banked in a shot in the lane with 4:24 left in the third period to put the Wolves back in the lead, 38-36, and they would avoided a Beacons' comeback bid the rest of the way.
