PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Graduate student forward
Katelyn Fanning (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) erupted for game-highs of 25 points and 12 rebounds to lift the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team to a 66-45 victory at Plymouth State University in the Little East Conference opener for both squads at Foley Gym on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Wolves improved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Panthers fell to 4-3 and 0-1.Â
Sophomore guard
Nicole Peralta (Windham, Conn.) joined Fanning in double figures with 12 points, while senior guard
Jasmine Caldwell (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) added 10 boards. They each also contributed four assists apiece.Â
WestConn utilized stifling defense to hold Plymouth to just 14-of-59 (23.7%) shooting from the floor. None of the Panther players reached double digits. Alessia Salzillo paced them with nine points. The visitors also won the battle on the glass, 47-34.
The Wolves jumped out to an 11-3 advantage to start the game. Peralta capped the spurt with a shot from the charity stripe.Â
The hosts closed the gap to 14-12 early in the second quarter. However, the visitors put together yet another solid flurry with a 19-3 run. Fanning knocked down a free throw to begin the barrage. Sophomore forward
Rosaleen Regan (Monroe, N.J) finished it off with a three-pointer off a feed from Peralta, giving WestConn a 33-15 lead at halftime.
The Panthers would not recover from the outburst in the second half as the Wolves cruised the rest of the way.
WestConn returns to action when they host UMass Boston in another LEC tilt on Tuesday. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m.
