Ryan Alkins (Queens, N.Y.) scored a game-high 18 points and led a group of three Western Connecticut State University reserves to score in double figures as the Wolves captured the opener of the Wolves Holiday Touranment over City College of New York, 94-59.
Alkins connected on 8-of-9 attempts from the field, grabbed two rebounds and collected a pair of steals as the Wolves improved to 9-0 on the season.Â
Jaeden Carr (Ossining, N.Y.) added 12 points while
Jaysean Morgan (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) added 10 points for the winners.
Sophomore forward
James Rhodes (Tarrytown, N.Y.) pulled down a game-high eight rebounds for WestConn.
Junior guard Yassine Sakhi (New York, N.Y.) led all players with 20 points, but the Beavers fell to 5-6 on the season. They will take on Coast Guard in the consolation game at 1 pm on Friday.
Marcus Heron yanked in six boards to lead CCNY.
The Wolves, which led from the get-go, led by as many as 35 points, took a 14-point advantage, 39-25, into intermission when Alkins banked in a lay up with 29 second remaining before the break.
Sakhi capped off a 13-3 run in the opening 3:36 of the second stanza to bring the Beavers within four points, 42-38.
WestConn erupted from there, scoring 14 of the games next 18 points to thwart any idea of a visitors comeback.
The Wolves will take on SUNY Maritime for the championship at 11 am on Friday. The Privateers downed the Bears, 77-68, in the other matchup on Thursday. The schedule was adjusted to accommodate travel concerns for the Beavers.
