Gabrielle Franks (Madison, Conn.) each notched double-doubles to lead the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team to a 65-63 overtime victory at the University of Saint Joseph in a non-league matchup on Tuesday night at James Calhoun Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
With the win, the Wolves improved to 3-1 overall while the Blue Jays dropped to 3-1.
The visitors dominated the glass by a 59-41 margin which translated to 14 second chance points. Franks tallied a team-high 14 points to go along with 12 rebounds while reigning LEC Co-Player of the Week Fanning added 13 points and a game-high 15 boards to propel WestConn to the comeback win.
The Wolves trailed by as many as seven points in the second quarter before Fanning sank a midrange jumper, slicing the deficit to 29-24 at halftime.
The lead changed hands several times in the third stanza before the hosts seized a 55-51 advantage in the fourth with just 53 seconds remaining on the clock.
However, the Wolves rallied to force overtime. Junior guard
Nicole Vivian (New Milford, Conn.) found Franks underneath the hoop for a layup before rookie guard
Malaysia Dingle (Brockton, Mass.) drained a step-back trifecta from the left corner to knot the count at 56-56 with 12 ticks left. Both teams had chances but could not convert after that to set up the extra session.
The visitors erupted to grab a 64-59 lead when Vivian sank a lefty runner midway thru overtime. The hosts countered with a pair of layups to shrink the gap to 64-63 with 1:29 left. But Vivian drained a free throw which forced the Blue Jays to inbound the ball from their own end with just four seconds remaining. Their half court heave came up short as the Wolves escaped with the come-from-behind win.
WestConn will look to build on the momentum when they travel to Plymouth State for their Little East Conference opener on Saturday at 1 p.m.
