Katelyn Fanning (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) continued her stellar start to the season as she tallied team-highs of 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team to a 64-57 victory over visiting non-conference opponent Mitchell College on Tuesday night at Feldman Arena.
With the win, the Wolves improved to 2-1 overall while the Mariners dropped to 2-2.
Junior forward
Gabrielle Franks (Madison, Conn.) also chipped in with a double-double on 12 points and 10 off the glass for the hosts.
Senior forward Amina Wiley (New Rochelle, N.Y.) led the visitors with a double-double of her own as she tallied game-highs of 23 points and 17 boards. Junior guard Yasmine Santos (Pawtucket, R.I.) added 14 points.
WestConn tallied the first basket of the game and would not look back as they led from wire-to-wire.
Fanning sank a pair of free throws as they jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. Rookie guard
Malaysia Dingle (Brockton, Mass.) converted a three-point play, widening the gap to 16-8 at the end of the first quarter.
The Wolves outscored the Mariners in the second quarter, 22-8. Sophomore forward
Rosaleen Regan (Monroe, N.J.) drilled a trifecta shortly before halftime to give the Wolves a 38-16 advantage.
The barrage continued in the second half. WestConn would lead by as many as 25 points. However, Mitchell did manage to shrink the deficit with a solid fourth quarter effort.
The Wolves moved the ball well throughout the contest as they dished out 18 assists, while the Mariners managed just three. The hosts also racked up 30 points off turnovers.
WestConn returns to action at the University of St. Joseph in a non-league tilt on November 29 at 7 p.m.
