DANBURY, Conn. - Senior guard
Kendall Robinson (East Patchogue, N.Y.) erupted for a game-high 27 points to lead the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball squad to a 95-63 win over visiting non-conference opponent Elms College on Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena.
With the victory, the Wolves improved to 4-0 overall on the young season, while the Blazers fell to 1-2.
Senior forward
Ryan Alkins (Queens, N.Y.) and sophomore guard
Keeshawn Jones (Middletown, N.Y.) chipped in with 14 and 10 points, respectively, to join Robinson in double figures. Junior guard
Jalen Jackson (Brick, N.J.) also put forth a solid effort as he tallied five points, four boards and a game-high five assists.
Rookie guard Jake Midura (Chicopee, Mass.) led the visitors with 14 points, while classmate forward RJ Mayfield (Springfield, Mass.) added 10. Graduate student guard Tahquell Cadle (Bridgeport, Conn.) just missed out on a double-double with nine points and nine off the glass.
The hosts shot a staggering 34-of-53 (52 percent) from the floor, while the visitors were held to just a 22-of-65 (34 percent) clip. WestConn also utilized its hops to snag 49 rebounds while the Blazers managed just 34. The Wolves also racked up 23 points off turnovers.
WestConn jumped out to an early 12-5 lead capped with a trifecta from Jones off a pass from Jackson. Elms rallied to capture an 18-16 lead midway thru the opening half. However, the Wolves answered with a 17-0 run. Robinson ended the flurry after hitting a layup while being hacked and sinking the ensuing shot from the charity stripe.
That run put the game out of reach for the visitors. WestConn would carry a 56-29 into the locker room at halftime. The gap grew to as many as 39 points in the second half.
The Wolves will look to extend the win streak to five when they head to their Little East Conference opener at Plymouth State on December 3.
