Katelyn Fanning (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.), the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team fell at non-conference opponent John Jay College, 59-46, in its season opener on Thursday night at the Doghouse.
Fanning added six rebounds to go along with a team-high three steals, while sophomore forward
Alyssa Virtue (Groton, Conn.) chipped in with a game-high four blocked shots.
Bobbi Green paced the Bloodhounds with a game-high 21 points, while Katie Healy contributed a double-double on the strength of 10 points and 11 boards to go along with a game-high five steals. Chayanne Kelly also notched double figures with 12 points.Â
The hosts shot 38.5 percent from the field (25-of-65) while holding the visitors to a 29 percent (18-of-62) clip. John Jay finished ahead in rebounds, 49-38, while also racking up 23 points off WestConn turnovers.Â
The Wolves would hold an early 16-8 lead to end the opening quarter as they utilized a 10-2 run. Senior forward
Ashley Rilley (Orangeburg, N.Y.) finished off the spurt with a three-pointer.
However, the Bloodhounds responded with a strong second quarter to seize a 27-23 lead at the break. Kelly drove the lane and connected on a layup to round out the rally.
WestConn could not recover in the second half as John Jay stretched the lead to as many 15 points late in the fourth.Â
With the loss, the Wolves dropped to 0-1 overall while the Bloodhounds improved to 3-1. WestConn will look to rebound from the setback when they meet the City of College of New York in their home opener on Saturday at 1 p.m.
