DANBURY, Conn. - Senior forward
Ryan Alkins (Queens, N.Y.) came off the bench to score a game-high 18 points to lead the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team to a convincing 79-53 victory over Springfield College in the championship game of the Wolves Classic at Feldman Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Alkins connected on 7-of-12 attempts from the field and was perfect in four attempts from the charity strip. He also yanked down four rebounds for WestConn, which improves to 2-0 on the season.
Kendall Robinson (East Patchogue, N.Y.) and
Jalen Jackson (Brick, N.J.) joined Alkins in double figures, netting 12 and 10 points, respectively for the winners.
Robinson grabbed a game-high six rebounds, dished out a pair of assists and made two steals for the Wolves.
Tre Hodge (Springfield, Mass.)Â was the only Pride player to score in double figures as he poured in 11 points.
WestConn led from the tip and shot a blistering 50.8% from the field, connecting on 35-of-65 attempts.
Senior
Jordon Brown (Danbury, Conn.) capped off a game-opening 9-0 run with a lay in 2:49 into the game.
Before the first half ended, the Wolves built a pair of 22-point leads, the last coming on a bucket in the lane by
Jayden Stephens (Yonkers, N.Y.) with six ticks left before the break.
The Pride cut their deficit to 18 points, 67-49, before WestConn closed out the game by scoring 12 of the final 16 points.
Fourteen of the 17 Wolves to see action on Sunday scored at least two points.
Springfield drops to 1-2 on the young campaign.
WestConn travels to John Jay College to meet the Bloodhounds on Wednesday, November 16. Game time is slated for 7 pm in the New York City.
