DANBURY, Conn. - Junior midfielder
Kent Eannarino (Brookfield, Conn.) netted two goals, while rookie forward Eric Lorent (Shelton, Conn.) dished out a pair of assists as the Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team raced past Trinity College, 3-1, in a non-conference matchup at the Westside Athletic Complex on Wednesday night.
With the win, the 21st ranked Wolves remain unbeaten, improving to 16-0-1, while the Bantams fell to 1-9-3.
The hosts jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when senior midfielder
Payton Blynn (New Milford, Conn.) tallied his team-leading 10th goal of the campaign. Lorent stole the ball in the Trinity zone and streaked down the right side of the field, firing a cross into the box for Blynn who booted a low shot inside the right post.
WestConn had several high quality scoring chances to widen the gap in the opening half but could not convert. The visitors nearly netted the equalizer late in the stanza but junior midfielder James Donaldson's (Kirkland, Quebec) missed the twine by inches.
However, the Bantams wouldn't give up, as they knotted the count at 1-1 in the 51st minute of play when junior forward Michael Traynor (Rye, N.Y) took a nifty feed from sophomore midfielder Jacob Loor (Houston, Texas) and headed the rock into the open side of the net.
The Wolves regained the lead less than 10 minutes later when Eannarino gathered a feed from a scrum inside the box and blasted a shot into the top-right corner to make it a 2-1 affair. He then added an insurance marker on a breakaway rush upfield with just six seconds remaining on the clock.
WestConn rookie netminder
Zachary Benson (Milford, Conn.) was uncontested as he improved to 13-0 overall, while Trinity junior goalie Bernardo Simoes (Lisbon, Portugal) kept the visitors in the game with several highlight reel worthy saves. He finished the contest with nine stops and dropped to 1-9-2.
The Wolves return to action when they host Little East Conference opponent UMass Boston for Senior Day on Saturday at 4 p.m.
