CASTLETON, Vt. - Junior forward
Ryan Alkins (Queens, N.Y.) notched a double-double on 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team to a 75-47 victory at Little East Conference foe Castleton University on Monday afternoon at Glenbrook Gym.
With the win, WestConn improved to 7-4 overall and 1-2 in league play, while the Spartans dropped to 5-7 and 0-3.
Three other players tallied double figures for the visitors. Junior guard
Kendall Robinson (East Patchogue, N.Y.), classmate
Ahmod Privott (Middletown, Conn.) and senior
Wes Nelson (Queens, N.Y.) finished with 15, 13 and 10 points, respectively. Junior forward
Solomon Silas (Danbury, Conn.) also chipped in with 10 boards.
Johnny Torrence led the hosts with 13 points and six rebounds, while Remy Brown added eight points and seven snags off the glass.
Castleton opened the game with back-to-back three pointers before WestConn reeled off a 14-0 run to seize the lead for good. Privott sank a free throw just before halftime, extending the WestConn lead to 35-17.
It was more of the same in the second half as WestConn played tough and would not allow the hosts to get back into the game.
WestConn returns to Feldman Arena on Wednesday when they host UMass-Dartmouth in another LEC tilt on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
