DANBURY, Conn. - Four players tallied double figures but it wasn't enough as the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team fell to visiting UMass-Dartmouth in a Little East Conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon. Junior guard
Ahmod Privott (Middletown, Conn.) led the way with 17 points, while classmate
Jaheim Young (Brooklyn, N.Y) and senior
Wes Nelson (Queens, N.Y.) chipped in with 10 apiece.
The Corsairs had all of their five of their starters notch double figures. Graduate student Jake Ashworth (Fairhaven, Mass.) paced the visitors with a game-high 18 points, while junior Jackson Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) added 13. After being held scoreless in the first half, senior guard Marcus Azor (Brockton, Mass.) - the squad's leading scorer averaging 17.9 points per game - netted his 1,000th career point on a righty breakaway dunk for his first basket of the contest. He would finish with 10 points, 11 rebounds and six steals.
WestConn came out of fire, shooting 55 percent (5-of-9) from three-point range in the first half. Their defensive play was also stellar as they racked up six blocked shots en route to a 41-31 halftime advantage.Â
However, the Corsairs rallied with a 17-6 run to seize the lead early in the second half. They stretched the lead to as many as 11 points with 3:25 remaining in the contest. WestConn attempted a comeback, trimming it to just a three point lead with 14 seconds left when junior forward
Ryan Alkins (Queens, N.Y.) sank a pair of free throws.
Moments later, Zancan would answer with a pair of his own, sending the visitors to victory. With the loss, WestConn dropped to 7-5 overall and 1-3 in league play, while UMD improved to 8-2 and 1-1.
WestConn returns to action for another LEC tilt when they host Keene State on Saturday at 3 p.m.
