DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team dropped to 10-8 overall and 4-6 in league play following a 110-55 loss at UMass Dartmouth in a Little East Conference matchup on Friday night. The Corsairs improved to 14-2 and 6-1.
Junior guard
Ahmod Privott (Middletown, Conn.) led the visitors with nine points, while senior
Matthew Turner (Trumbull, Conn.) and rookie
Keeshawn Jones (Middletown, N.Y.) tallied eight apiece.
Seven players finished with double figures in scoring for the hosts. Jake Ashworth led the way with a game-high 18, while Marcus Azor notched a triple-double on the strength of 10 points to along with game-highs of 13 rebounds and 14 assists.
The difference maker came from the three-point shooting column. WestConn finished 2-of-19 (11 percent) while they were unable to contain the hosts who connected on a scorching 18-of-26 (69 percent) shots from beyond the arc.
WestConn also had a tough time at the free throw line, sinking 5-of-13 (39 percent), while UMD netted 14-of-19 (74 percent) attempts.
The Corsairs flew out to an early 19-2 lead and would not look back. WestConn would trim the advantage to nine points midway through the opening half but could not overcome the UMD hot shooting.
WCSU will look to put this loss in the rear view mirror and focus on their next contest when they travel to Southern Maine for another LEC tilt on Sunday at 4 p.m.
