Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Robinson Hits 24 in Double OT Loss at Southern Maine, 85-81

GORHAM, Maine - Despite a game-high 24 points from junior guard Kendall Robinson (East Patchogue, N.Y), the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team fell to Little East Conference foe Southern Maine, 85-81, in a double overtime thriller on Monday afternoon. With the loss, WestConn dropped to 10-9 overall and 4-7 in league play, while the Huskies improved to 9-9 and 4-5.

Robinson shot a blazing 10-of-15 from the field to go along with eight rebounds and a game-high four blocked shots. Senior guard Matthew Turner (Trumbull, Conn.) and junior guard Ahmod Privott (Middletown, Conn.) joined him in double figures with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Facing its largest deficit of the game less than four minutes into the second half, the Huskies responded outscoring WestConn 35-19 over the next 15 minutes to take a slim 66-65 lead with 1:04 remaining in regulation. USM's Dixon scored the go-ahead basket, a three, to give USM its first lead since the 8:17 mark of the first half (17-16).

After Dixon's three, Robinson sank one of two free throws to tie up the game and both teams misfired on their final possessions to force overtime.

In the first overtime, both teams traded baskets to start, including layups from Robinson and senior Wes Nelson (Queens, N.Y.) to give WestConn a 70-67 lead early.  However, Southern Maine's Hawes hit a game-tying three and Dixon followed with a jumper and one of two free throws to push USM ahead 73-70 with 1:27 to play.  WestConn answered back, again, however, as Turner sank a long three to knot the game up at 73-73 setting the game up for a second overtime.

Robinson and Privott each scored in the paint in the second overtime to give WestConn a 77-73 lead in the first 90 seconds, before USM scored seven unanswered points to lead 80-77 with 2:12 to go.  Chadbourne started the run with a three from the top of the arc and was followed by a short jumper from Kuhn and a offensive rebound and putback from Lombard.

Nelson converted a pair of free throws on the next WestConn possession to make it a one-point game, 80-79, but Chadbourne followed with another three – his sixth of the game – to make it 83-79 with 1:36 to play.

Turner made it a one possession game, 83-81 with 24 seconds to go. WestConn snagged an offensive board off a missed free throw but was unable to make its second look at the basket and USM's Dixon closed it out on the line for the 85-81 final.

WestConn will look to rebound when they host Rhode Island College in another LEC contest on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
