DANBURY, Conn. - Sophomore guard
Nicole Vivian (New Milford, Conn.) scored a game-high 18 points, but the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team could not hold off visiting University of Massachusetts Boston and dropped its eighth straight game, 60-49 at Feldman Arena on Wednesday night.
WestConn falls to 6-10 overall and are now 1-6 in the Little East Conference.
The Beacons, which improve to 5-8 overall and 4-3 in the league, were led by three players in double figures. Keriann Farina (Arlington, Mass.) led UMB with 16 points while Meg Dixon (Hanover, Mass.) and Rayla Gonzalez (Boston, Mass.) chipped in 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Following a three-point bucket from Vivian at the 5:07 mark of the second period, WestConn held its first lead, 21-18 since she converted a short jumper in the opening minute of the game.
After trailing by three points for the second time before intermission, Gonzalez buried a follow-up lay in with 1:13 remaining to put the Beacons back up, 25-23. They never trailed the rest of the way. The visitor's lead grew to 13 points, 49-36, after Dixon hit a pair of free throws 12 seconds into the final stanza. She led all players with 11 rebounds on Wednesday.
WestConn trimmed its deficit to six points, 51-46, on another Vivian bank shot with 7:22 left, but that would be the closest it would be the rest of the way.
Junior
Ashley Rilley (Orangeburg, N.Y.) added 10 points for WestConn.
