Virtue Nets 16 in Loss to UMass Dartmouth, 76-62

DANBURY, Conn. - Rookie forward Alyssa Virtue (Groton, Conn.) came off the bench to tally a team-high 16 points. However, the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team fell to visiting Little East Conference opponent UMass Dartmouth, 76-62, on Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena. Sophomore forward Gabrielle Franks (Madison, Conn.) chipped in with 14 points to go along with a game-high nine rebounds.

Sophomore guard Teja Andrews (Plymouth, Mass.) finished with a game-high 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field to lead the Corsairs. Classmate guard Kaylin Zalewski (Johnston, R.I.) and senior guard Jordan Moretti (Johnston, R.I.) added 11 and 15, respectively. 

The contest was close to start as WestConn trailed by just two points to end the first quarter, 18-16. The visitors turned red-hot from behind the three-point line in the second stanza, knocking down 4-of-6 shots to seize a 37-28 lead at halftime.

UMD continued to shoot the ball well in the third, this time powering into the lane and finishing 8-of-14 (57 percent) on two-point attempts, stretching the advantage to 57-42 heading into the final quarter. 

WestConn would win the fourth period battle 20-19 as Franks wrapped up the scoring with jumper from the paint, cementing the final count at 76-62 in favor of the visitors.

With the loss, the hosts dropped to 6-8 overall and 1-4 in league play, while the visitors improved to 9-5 and 3-2. WestConn returns to action at LEC foe Rhode Island College on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
