Ashley Rilley (Orangeburg, N.Y) drained a team-high 12 points on the strength of a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line but the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball squad was downed at Little East Conference nemesis Rhode Island College, 69-46, on Monday night.
Despite holding a commanding edge in the rebound column, 52-39, WestConn committed 34 turnovers while RIC coughed it up just 12 times. The Anchorwomen converted those turnovers into 31 points. The WestConn bench was also outscored, 41-17.
Abby Phelan led the hosts with a game-high 13 points off the bench, while Ashanti Frazier and Izabelle Booth connected on 11 apiece.Â
WestConn scored the first couple baskets of the game. However, RIC countered and quickly built up a 15-10 lead to end the opening quarter. The visitors could not recover as RIC added to the advantage, going up by as many as 24 points the rest of the way.
With the loss, WestConn dropped its seventh straight contest and moved to 6-9 overall and 1-5 in league play, while the Anchorwomen stretched their win streak to 10, improving to 14-4 overall and 9-0 to remain atop the LEC standings.Â
WestConn will look to snap the skid when they host conference opponent UMass Boston on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
