DANBURY, Conn. - Despite a team-high 13 points from sophomore guard
Nicole Vivian (New Milford, Conn.), the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team fell to visiting archrival Eastern Connecticut, 55-39, in a Little East Conference matchup on Wednesday night.
With the loss, WestConn dropped to 6-7 overall and 1-3 in league play, while the Warriors improved to 7-8 and 4-2.
Senior forward Anna Barry (Andover, Conn.) - also a standout on the women's volleyball squad - tallied game-highs of 26 points, 16 rebounds and four blocked shots to lead Eastern. Senior guard Danielle O'Brien (Rockland, Mass.) chipped in with seven points and six off the glass.
The visitors led from wire-to-wire. They opened the game with a 20-4 spurt to hold the advantage at the conclusion of the first quarter.
It was a similar story in the second. WestConn was held to 13.3 percent shooting, while Eastern posted a 40.6 clip to maintain the gap at the break, 30-10.
WestConn put together a surge in the final quarter. They would outscore the visitors, 20-14, on the strength of 6-for-11 shooting to go along with a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line.
WCSU will look to rebound from the loss when they head to Plymouth State for another LEC tilt on Saturday at 1 p.m.
