DANBURY, CONN. - The Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team came back from a 2-0 deficit to send the game into overtime, following goals from
Lorenzo Lauria (New Haven, Conn.) and
Matthew Restrepo (Bridgeport, Conn.). Coast Guard's Gabriel Gallant (Woodbridge, Va.) scored from 27 yards out, off a free kick, to lift the visitors to a 3-2 triumph at the Westside Athletic Complex on Wednesday night.
The Bears, now 4-0, scored twice in the first half. John DeTommaso (Farmington, Conn.) scored his first goal of the season in the 16th minute of play. Less than two minutes later, Noah Engstrom (Brea, Calf.) put the New London 11 up 2-0 with his second marker of the campaign.
With 11:42 left before the first break, Lauria unleashed a blast from 30 yards out and tucked it under the USCGA cross bar. It was his first collegiate goal.
In the 78th minute, Restrepo's fourth goal of the season came from the penalty circle. He beat Coast Guard keeper John Vaaler (Arnold, Md.) to his lower left side.
On the ensuing trip down the field by the Bears, a foul inside the 18-yard box was accessed to WestConn.
Mike Daunt's (Haymarket, Va.) penalty try was stopped by WestConn senior netminder
Daniel Szabo (Trumbull, Conn.), but Szabo was flagged for leaving his line early.
Junior midfielder John Flood (Midlothian, Va.) was called upon for the re-do, but Szabo made his second spectacular save to keep the game knotted at, 2-2.
Szabo made four saves on the night while Vaaler, who came on following intermission, made one stop. Coast Guard starter Josh Hudson (Tempe, Ariz.) made a pair of saves over the first 45 minutes.
WestConn travels to Ramapo College for meeting with the Roadrunners this Saturday, September 11. Kick-off is set for 1 pm.
The Bears travel to arch-rival Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. for a 12 noon match on Saturday.
