DANBURY, CONN. - Sophomore back
Mark Tricarico (Hopewell Junction, N.Y) scored the game's only goal, in the eighth minute of action, and the Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team held on to defeat visiting John Jay College, 1-0 at the Westside Athletic Complex on Wednesday night, in front of 156 fans.
Tricarico's unassisted goal was his first career goal as he and WestConn did not play in 2020 due to the ongoing Covid-19 Pandemic.
WestConn finished with a convincing 21-5 advantage on shots tonight and delivered eight corner kicks to the Bloodhounds one.
Senior goalie
Daniel Szabo (Trumbull, Conn.), fresh off being named Little East Conference Goalie of the Week, for the second straight Monday, made four saves and registered his third individual shut out of the season.Â
John Jay, now 0-3 on the season, played well defensively, including sophomore net minder Jesus Perez (Elmhurst, N.Y.) who made a game-high five saves.
This week's LEC Offensive Player and Rookie of the Week
Lorenzo Lauria (New Haven, Conn.) led all players with four shot attempts in the victory.
WestConn opens LEC play on Saturday, September 18 at Rhode Island College. Game time is slated for 1 pm in Providence.
The Bloodhounds travel to Glassboro, N.J. for a 3 pm meeting with Stockton University.
