Men's Soccer Falls in LEC Opener at RIC, 3-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Despite outshooting the hosts by a whopping 14-3 margin in the second half, the Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team could not pierce the scoring column in a 3-0 loss at Rhode Island College in the Little East Conference opener for both squads on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, WestConn dropped to 6-2 overall and 0-1 in league play, while the Anchormen improved to 3-2 and 1-0.

RIC junior forward Brandon Ramos (Boston, Mass.) scored on a free kick from the top of the 18-yard box in the eighth minute for his first of the season.

Senior defender Roman Davis (Watertown, Mass.) set up senior forward Jonathan Oliveira (Providence, R.I.) for his team-leading third goal of the year in the 21st minute with a long breakaway pass. RIC took a 2-0 lead, while holding a 12-7 advantage in shots, into halftime.

Sophomore forward Samuel Talavera (Providence, R.I) rounded the scoring out with his first goal in the 48th minute with some one-touch passing inside the box.

WestConn senior goalkeeper Daniel Szabo (Trumbull, Conn.) took the loss (6-2) with a two-save effort. RIC senior goalkeeper Charlie Tashjian made nine saves for his, and the team's, third consecutive shutout win (3-2).

WestConn will look to rebound from the loss when they square off against visiting Western New England University in a non-league matchup on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
