Women's Lacrosse Claims Top Seed in LEC Tournament with 20-3 Win at Castleton

Box Score CASTLETON, VT - Senior attacker Caroline Galligan (Marshfield, Mass.) netted a game-high four goals and dished out an assist to lead the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team to a 20-3 victory at Castleton University in the regular season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Colonials claimed the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Little East Conference Postseason Tournament, finishing the slate at 7-0 overall and 5-0 in league play. Castleton dropped to 3-8 and 2-5, capturing the sixth and final seed. WestConn receives a first round bye and will host the winner of Tuesday's quarterfinal round matchup between fourth-seeded Keene State and fifth-seeded Eastern Connecticut. The LEC semifinal meeting will take place on Thursday at 6 pm at the Westside Athletic Complex.

"We concluded the regular season with a great win on the road," said WestConn head coach Meghan Els.  "For the first time in program history, we finished undefeated and as regular-season champions.  It's a great accomplishment for this group and something we have been talking about since day one."

In addition to Galligan's effort, juniors Dominique DeMarsico (Danbury, Conn.), Brianna Pota (East Meadow, N.Y.), sophomore Alexa Riggio (North Massapequa, N.Y.) and rookie Victoria Gracy (Bethel, Conn.) each tallied hat tricks for the Colonials.

The visitors outshot the hosts, 47-9, while also dominating ground balls, 33-6. Sophomore netminder Anna Schipf (Babylon, N.Y.) earned her seventh win and stopped three shots for the Colonials.

WestConn jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and would not look back. DeMarsico capped the run with her 14th goal of the season. She would later add her 15th of the campaign less than one minute before the break, widening the advantage to 12-1.

The second half wasn't much closer as Galligan rounded out the barrage with her team-leading 28th and 29th goals of the year.

"We are hungry for more and look forward to the next test on Thursday," added Els.
