Box Score 3 PORTLAND, ME - The Western Connecticut State University men's and women's tennis teams wrapped up a busy day in extremely windy and cold conditions on Friday at Southern Maine. The Colonial men notched an 8-1 win before the women won a pair of matches, 5-4 and 5-2.
The women began each match with a 3-2 lead for defaults, sophomores
Sarah Silva (Brookfield, Conn.) and
Natalie Paradise (Naugatuck, Conn.) won at No. 1 doubles in a tightly contested match, 8-5. In the meantime, Misner easily won her #3 singles match 6-0, 6-0.
Silva and Paradise then went on to play a condensed singles match, losing them, but WestConn won the overall match 5-4.
In the second contest, Silva and Paradise played a rematch in their #1 doubles court and it was even closer as they closed out the win in a tiebreaker. 8-7. The score of the breaker was 8-6. Additionally, classmate
Julia Misner (Meriden, Conn.) completed her busy day with another 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles. Due to the length of all of the matches and the weather difficulties, the match was ended with the Colonials winning 5-2.
"The conditions today were terrible for tennis. The wind changed the dynamic of the entire match, but our ladies adjusted well. Silva and Paradise did an amazing job keeping their composure and focus to pull out both of their doubles matches," said WestConn head coach
Shawn Stillman
The men took a 3-0 lead after doubles, with sophomore
Sebastian Frisch (Redding, Conn.) and senior
Will Hogan (Ridgefield, Conn.) winning their contest in a tiebreaker at the No. 2 slot.
With the exception of a close loss at No. 2 singles, WestConn took five out of six courts. Junior
Jay Kilcourse (New Fairfield, Conn.) won in an exciting three set match, concluding with a final set tiebreaker.
"Good effort by the men today in these awfully challenging conditions. Sweeping the doubles matches helped take the pressure off of the singles lineup. We now have a week off before our next match where we will be focusing on preparing for the conference playoffs," added Stillman.
The WestConn women return to action against visiting Plymouth State tomorrow at 1 p.m. Both squads travel to Castleton on Friday to wrap up the regular season slate.
