DANBURY, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University baseball team fell to visiting 23rd-ranked Eastern Connecticut, 23-10, in a Little East Conference matchup on Tuesday afternoon. The Warriors smashed a pair of grand slam homers en route to the win. However, the Colonials refused to go quietly as they rallied with four runs in the final frame of the contest.
The visitors jumped out to an 8-0 advantage capped with the first grand slam off the bat of senior first baseman Holden White (Wallingford, Conn.) WestConn junior outfielder
Christopher Suarez (Poughquag, N.Y.) belted a three-run shot over the left field wall in the fifth, slicing the Eastern lead to 11-6.
The Warriors put up their second seven-run inning in the top of the seventh. Sophomore Thomas Acevedo (Miami, FL) led the frame off with a solo blast before Eastern added its second bases loaded shot of the game, extending the lead to 23-6. The Colonials tried to rally patiently in the bottom of the seventh, forcing the Warrior reliever into a slew of walks and hit batters that accounted for four runs. WestConn stranded a pair of runners with a grounder to end the contest.
With the loss, the Colonials dropped to 1-8 overall, while the Warriors improved to 19-2. WestConn returns to action for a doubleheader at Keene State on Friday at 3 p.m.
