Baseball Drops Heartbreaker at Keene State, 13-12

KEENE, N.H. - After jumping out to a 12-7 lead through five innings of play, the Western Connecticut State University baseball fell victim to a walk-off hit as Keene State rallied to capture a 13-12 win on Friday afternoon at the Owl Athletic Complex. Junior shortstop Logan Terry (Ellington, Conn.) paced the Colonials with three hits and three RBI's which included a two-run homer, while rookie first baseman Joe Gambino (Stamford, Conn.) added a pair of hits and three RBI's.

With the loss, the Colonials dropped to 1-9 overall and 1-8 in Little East Conference play, while the Owls improved to 3-13 and 2-7.

Things looked good early as WestConn jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. Gambino drove in a pair with a single to right field in the first inning before Terry smashed his two-run shot over the right field fence in the third.

However, the hosts countered with four runs in the bottom of the third to knot the count at 4-4.

WestConn struck right back in the top of the fourth. With the bases loaded, Terry knocked a single to right to drive in his third run of the game. Gambino would notch an RBI on a fielder's choice before sophomore infielder Chris Ehlers (Norwalk, Conn.) singled to right, scoring Terry. Junior outfielder Jake Montas (Ellington, Conn.) would round out the seven-run frame with a sacrifice fly, sending Ehlers across the plate, giving the visitors an 11-4 advantage.

The Owls cut the deficit to 11-7 with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth before the Colonials knocked another sacrifice, extending their lead to 12-7 in the top of the fifth. However, it was all Keene State from that point on as they rallied with runs in each of the last four innings before Montembea smacked a game-winning double to score the winning run.

The squads were scheduled to play a doubleheader on Friday. However, Game Two was postponed due to COVID-19 protocol. The non-league twin bill slated for Saturday has also been postponed for the time being.
