Joe Gambino Collects Five Hits In Doubleheader Loss To Castleton

DANBURY, Conn. - Sophomore first baseman Joe Gambino (Stamford, Conn.) went 5-for-8 and drove in three runs, but the Western Connecticut State University baseball team dropped a Little East Conference doubleheader to visiting Castleton University, 10-4 and 7-3, at Westside Field on Monday.

Zach Edwards (Seymour, Conn.), Max Gregory (Jewitt City, Conn.), Moe Echevarria (Norwalk, Conn.) and Christopher Ehlers (Norwalk, Conn.) each finished with multiple hits for WestConn.

In the opener, the Colonials, now 1-7 overall and in the LEC, were in a nip-and-tuck battle through seven innings, trailing 3-2.  The Spartans scored five runs in the top half of the eight inning to open up an 8-2 advantage.  Armando Cardenes (Mesa, Ariz.) singled up the middle to drive in a pair of runs and end the scoring barrage for the visitors.

Adam Newton (Putney, Vt.) led the Spartans offense and went 3-for-4, drove in three runs and scored twice in game one.  Designated hitter Jarrett Williams (Granville, N.Y.) drove in three runs for the winners.

Senior Max Olmsted (East Montpelier, Vt.) earned the victory after going eight innings, allowing four runs, three of them earned, on nine hits and struck out 10.  He is now 1-2 on the season.

Junior righty Kyle Brelling (Bethel, Conn.) suffered the loss and is now 0-2 on the year.  He allowed five runs, four of them earned, on five hits, struck out six and walked two.

In the nightcap, WestConn scattered six hits with its only extra-base wrap was a double by Gregory.

Heading the Spartans 11-hit attack was Evan Keegan (Malone, N.H.) and Newtown with a pair of singles.

Richard Walker (Swanton, Vt.) improves to 2-1 on the season.  He went six innings, allowed two runs on five hits, struck out four and walks as many.  Matthew Deen (Mississauga, Ont.) allowed an unearned run before yielding to Orr for the final three outs.

Pauly DiPaterio (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) falls to 0-1 after allowing six runs, only two of them earned in three innings on the bump.  He allowed four hits, struck out three and walked four.

Ethan Skinner (Berlin, Conn.) pitch six strong innings of relief for the Colonials.  He allowed just one run on seven hits, struck out four and walked two.

Castleton improves to 8-8 overall and are now 5-4 in the league.

WestConn takes on intra-state rival Eastern Connecticut State University in a single game on Tuesday.  The originally scheduled doubleheader with the Warriors will now start at 3:30 pm.
