PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Despite a 2-for-5 showing at the plate from senior shortstop
Logan Terry (Ellington, Conn.), the Western Connecticut State University baseball squad dropped both games of a doubleheader at Little East Conference opponent Rhode Island College on Saturday afternoon. After a two-hour rain delay to start, the Colonials fell in the opener 7-1, before being downed in Game Two, 12-0. With the losses, WestConn dropped to 1-5 overall and 1-5 in league play, while RIC improved to 10-8 and 4-3.
The Anchormen offense got off to a hot start in the first inning, driving in a pair of runs to stake the hosts to an early 2-0 lead, thanks to a two-run single by freshman first basemenÂ
Cal Parrillo (Greenville, R.I.).
Â
The middle part of the game was quiet for both teams as WestConn managed to get a run across in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Terry that plated sophomore second basemenÂ
Kevin Smith (Vernon, Conn.).
Â
The RIC offense exploded for five runs in the home half of the eighth inning that enabled the hosts to sail to the, 7-1, game one victory. Senior second basemenÂ
Nate Vigeant (Coventry, R.I.) smacked a two-run double in the outburst.
Â
RIC sophomore pitcherÂ
Connor Davey (Cheshire, Conn.) threw 7.2 innings, allowing just one run on six hits and recorded seven strikeouts, to earn his third win (3-2) of the season.
WCSU sophomore pitcherÂ
Michael Kolf (Brookfield, Conn.) took the loss (0-1).
Â
Game Two:
The Anchormen offense picked right up where it left off in game two as RIC was able to score a pair of runs in the home half of the opening frame. Parrillo doubled to right to bring in Santerre and freshman designated hitterÂ
Jarrad Grossguth (Coventry, R.I.) to put RIC ahead, 2-0.
Â
Vigeant drove in a pair of runs in the fourth with a single up the middle to put RIC on top, 4-0.
Â
Later in the fourth inning, a Grossguth single to center field plated two more Anchormen as RIC took a commanding, 7-0, lead.
Â
The hot bats for the Anchormen continued into the fifth inning as they were able to put five more runs on the board, paced by a junior left fielderÂ
Joey Coro (North Providence, R.I.) RBI triple and a classmate right fielderÂ
Nick D'Ambra (Coventry, R.I.) triple to right center that knocked in another two.
Â
Shemick was lights out throughout the game, retiring 11 straight batters before the visitors registered their second hit in the fourth inning. Shemick earned the complete game win (3-1).
Â
WestConn sophomore pitcherÂ
Justin Grullon (Washington Heights, N.Y.)Â was saddled with the loss (0-2). The Colonials will look to rebound whey they square off against Castleton on Monday at 2 p.m.
