Box Score BOSTON, Mass. - Senior guard
Matthew Turner (Trumbull, Conn.) tallied a game-high 23 points but it wasn't enough as the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team was downed at Little East Conference nemesis UMass-Boston, 69-63, on Tuesday night at Clark Athletic Center.
Junior guard
Ahmod Privott (Middletown, Conn.) chipped in with 15 points and seven rebounds, while senior guard
Wes Nelson (Queens, N.Y.) finished with seven points and a team-high six dimes.Â
The Beacons utilized a well-balanced scoring attack as four players netted double figures, while a pair of other finished just shy with nine points apiece. Stephen DiGregorio and Charlie Mitchell led the way with 13 points each, while Charles Mitchell (brother of Charlie) dished out a game-high seven assists.
WestConn controlled the glass. However, the Beacons were able to convert on more three-point and free throw opportunities.Â
The visitors held an early 10-5 lead on a Nelson layup but the hosts would not let the game get out of reach in the first half. They would eventually seize the advantage and head into the locker room with a 29-25 lead at halftime.Â
WCSU would regain the upper hand when Nelson sank a three-pointer and added a free throw, shortly thereafter, to make it 41-38.
UMass-Boston then reeled off a large run midway through the second stanza that would prove to be the difference maker. WestConn would not recover as the Beacons played solid defense the rest of the way.
With the loss, WCSU dropped to 6-3 overall while the Beacons improved to 4-3. WestConn will regroup during the holiday break and look to bounce back against SUNY New Paltz when they open the WestConn Holiday Tournament starting on December 29 at 3 p.m.
