DANBURY, Conn. - Senior guard
Wes Nelson (Queens, N.Y.) tallied a team-high 15 points and a game-high eight assists but it wasn't enough as the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team fell to visiting non-league opponent Westfield State, 75-63, on Sunday afternoon at Feldman Arena in the WestConn Tip-Off Tournament Championship game. Plattsburgh downed Sarah Lawrence, 77-72, earlier in the day in the consolation game.
WestConn senior
Matthew Turner (Trumbull, Conn.) notched 14 points, while junior guard
Ahmod Privott (Middletown, Conn.) chipped in with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Westfield's JT Thompson buried a game-high 26 points while Justin Rennis added 13.
The hosts jumped out to an early 19-13 lead when Turner drained a three-pointer off a nifty pass from Nelson. Nelson sank a mid-range shot extending the lead to eight before Jordan Wiggins canned a shot in the paint, trimming it to 34-28 at halftime.
The advantage widened to eight once again when Nelson knocked down a free throw attempt early in the second. However, the visitors stormed back with a monstrous run midway through the second half to take a 58-48 lead when Kuany Teng drilled a trifecta.
The Owls would not give up the advantage en route to the win.
With the loss, WestConn dropped to 1-1 overall. They return to action at non-conference foe Keystone College on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
