DANBURY, Conn. - Junior guard
Ashley Rilley (Orangeburg, N.Y.) notched a double-double on 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds to lead the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team to a 65-58 victory over visiting non-conference opponent John Jay College on Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena.
Rookie forward
Rosaleen Regan (Monroe, N.J.) chipped in with a team-high 11 points and seven boards, while sophomore forward
Gabrielle Franks (Madison, Conn.) contributed 10 points and six rebounds off the bench.Â
Junior guard Bobbi Green (Queens, NY) knocked down a game-high 18 points to lead the Bloodhounds, while rookies Ayanna Edwards (Huntington, N.Y.) and Ashley Zeolla (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) added 11 and 10, respectively.Â
The contest was close much of the way. WestConn took a 28-24 lead into halftime when sophomore guard
Olivia Monteleone (Cold Spring, N.Y.) sank a midrange jumper. The hosts extended the lead to 46-40 just before the third quarter buzzer when Franks took a pretty pass from junior
Jasmine Caldwell (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) and converted a layup.Â
John Jay stepped up the defensive full court pressure in the final quarter. They put together a 9-0 run early in the fourth to seize their first lead since the opening quarter. Green rounded out the spurt with a three-pointer from the right corner.Â
However, the visitors advantage was short lived. Caldwell put home a layup while being fouled before Monteleone came around a pick and drained a shot from the right elbow with 4:21 remaining as WestConn pulled away 57-51. They would maintain the gap the rest of the way as they were able to connect on 8-of-9 free throw attempts.
With the win, WestConn improved to 4-2 overall while John Jay dropped to 3-3. WCSU returns to action when they host the University of Saint Joseph in a non-league battle on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
