NEW LONDON, Conn. - Juniors
Ashley Rilley (Orangeburg, N.Y.) and
Jasmine Caldwell (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) each scored a team-high 10 points to lead the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball to a 53-52 victory over Mitchell College on Wednesday afternoon at the Yarnall Athletic Center.
The Mariners' Amina Wiley netted a game-high 29 points and joined Le'Sandra Turner with nine rebounds in the loss.
Wiley buried a jumper with 2:48 remaining in the fourth quarter to knot the game at 52-52.
The score held until Rilley canned the front end of a two free throws with five seconds remaining. It was Wiley that earned the whistle after Rilley pulled in an offensive rebounds in the closing seconds.
The contest was tight the entire way as there were five deadlocks and three lead changes. WestConn's largest lead, 43-38, came following a three pointer from sophomore
Olivia Monteleone (Cold Spring, N.Y.) with 7:58 left in the final stanza.
WestConn will enjoy a short break for Thanksgiving then get right back to the hardwood when it hosts John Jay College at Feldman Arena this Saturday, November 27. Tip-off is slated for 4 pm with the Bloodhounds.
