MILTON, Mass. - Three players racked up double-doubles, but it wasn't enough as the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball squad fell at tournament host Curry College, 61-58, in overtime of the Curry Championship Tournament at the Student Center Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
Junior guard
Ashley Rilley (Orangeburg, N.Y.) led the WestConn effort with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Classmate
Jasmine Caldwell (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) notched 11 points and 10 boards, while rookie
Rosaleen Regan (Monroe, N.J.) finished with 10 points and 10 off the glass. Junior
Katelyn Fanning (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.) also snagged a game-high 13 rebounds, while rookie
Alyssa Virtue (Groton, Conn.) chipped in with 10 points off the bench.
Kathrynn Dunn paced Curry with a game-high 20 points to go along with 12 boards, while Kristyanna Remillard drained 18.
The game was close most of the way. WestConn held its largest lead - a seven point advantage - late in the third quarter. However, the hosts would rally and capture a four-point lead with less than a minute remaining.
However, Caldwell stepped to the charity stripe and knocked down a pair of shots to knot the count at, 50-50, with 21 seconds remaining. Remillard would misfire on a three-pointer at the buzzer.
Emerson Cherry took control of the game for Curry. She sank a trifecta late in overtime before knocking down a pair of free throws to cement the win.
With the loss, WestConn dropped to 1-2 overall. They return to action against visiting non-league foe City College of New York on Saturday at 2 p.m.
