Matthew Turner (Trumbull, Conn.) tallied a team-high 13 points, while junior
Solomon Silas (Danbury, Conn.) chipped in with 11 off the bench to lead the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team to 75-40 victory over visiting non-conference foe Mt. Saint Mary College on Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena. The hosts got off to a sluggish start but picked up the intensity in the second half, outscoring the visitors by a whopping 44-14 margin.
It was a well balanced attack as 14 different players scored for WestConn. They also forced 26 turnovers while coughing the ball up just 16 times. Additionally, the hosts shot a scorching 64.3% (18-of-28) from the field in the second stanza.
Junior guard Chris Yearwood (Red Hook, N.Y.) led the Knights with 10 points, while rookie J.P. Egan (Lansdale, Pa.) pulled down a game-high six rebounds.
WestConn jumped out to an early 18-8 lead. However, Mt. Saint Mary chipped away throughout the first half, cutting it to 28-26. Rookie forward
Malik Cole (Brooklyn, N.Y.) notched an offensive putback, giving the hosts a 31-26 halftime advantage.
It was all WestConn in the second half. They began it with a 13-2 run and would not look back.
With the win, WCSU improved to 3-1 overall, while the Knights dropped 0-2. WestConn returns to the court at non-league foe Elms College. Tip-off is slated for Monday at 7 p.m.
