Brochu's Big Day Propels Women's Volleyball to Wins Over Southern Maine and Curry

GORHAM, ME. - Graduate student Ali Brochu (Winsted, Conn.) tallied a match-high 20 kills against LEC foe Southern Maine before racking up another match-high of 11 against non-conference opponent Curry College in a pair of victories for the Western Connecticut State University women's volleyball squad on Saturday afternoon. With the wins, WestConn concluded the regular season schedule at 18-7 overall and 5-3 in league play.

They clinched the No. 4 seed in the upcoming LEC Postseason Championship Tournament and will host No. 5 seed Eastern Connecticut on Tuesday.

WestConn began the afternoon with an LEC matchup at host Southern Maine. After winning the opening set, 25-16, they were edged in the ensuing two sets, 25-21 and 25-20. However, they stormed back to win the fourth set, 25-12, before breezing to a fifth set win, 15-8, capturing the match victory. Victoria Alomar, Victoria Korzan and Skylar Kellam each posted solid offensive and defensive performances for WestConn.

Despite the 3-0 win against Curry, it was a hard fought battle. WestConn displayed their poise and won three difficult sets, 25-18, 28-26 and 26-24. Senior Abbi Debes (New Milford, Conn.) and junior Taylor Rohan (Yonkers, N.Y.) were stellar at the net, combining for seven blocks.
