Franz Muhaj Nets Two Goals In Win Over UMass Dartmouth On Alumni Day

DANBURY, CONN. - Sophomore Franz Muhaj (Bridgeport, Conn.) scored a pair of goals and the Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team defeated visiting University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 4-0 on Alumni Day at the Westside Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Muhaj netted his team-leading 10th and 11th goal of the season, but it was senior Afa Reyes (Bridgeport, Conn.) who put WestConn in an early lead with his second marker of the year.  Reyes scored off a splendid feed from Ricardo Rodriguez (Danbury, Conn.) with 9:25 elapsed on the clock.  The score stood through intermission.

Muhaj's goals came in the 63rd and 66th minute and provided some needed insurance as the Corsairs began to get quality chances in the second half.  He was set up by Reyes and Kent Eannarino (Brookfield, Conn.), respectively.  Eannarino was named LEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week last Monday.

Freshman Jordan Decosta, this week's Little East Conference Rookie of the Week, tacked on his fifth goal of the season from the penalty spot, with 17:18 remaining in the game.

WestConn, winners of seven straight and holders of a 13-3 overall record, finished with a convincing 25-7 shot advantage on Saturday.  WestConn sits atop the LEC standings at 5-1 with two league matches remaining.

Senior goalie Daniel Szabo (Trumbull, Conn.) made two saves before yielding to Justin Figueiredo for the final 14 minutes.  Figueiredo was not challenged.

Jacob Castro (Swansea, Mass.) made five saves for the Corsairs, which drop to 5-5-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the league.

WestConn travels to Trinity College on Wednesday, October 20 for a 7 pm meeting with the Bantams, then face UMass Boston on Saturday, in Beantown at 2 pm.  The regular season concludes when WestConn plays host to University of Southern Maine at 10:00 am on Saturday, October 30.

GAME NOTE:  Nearly 40 WestConn alumni were in attendance on Saturday and were recognized during half-time in front of 323 family and friends.
