Box Score DANBURY, CT - The Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team cruised to a 4-0 victory over visiting University of St. Joseph at The Westside Athletic Complex on Wednesday night.
Nineteenth-year head coach Joe Mingachos did not know what to expect after his Colonials returned to the pitch after a well-deserved seven-day break.
He found out quickly that the rest, after opening the season playing five games over seven days, did the Western 11 well.
Junior back Meaghan Gustafson (Newington, CT) put the Colonials on the scoreboard 1:17 into the contest when she received a pass from sophomore Autumn Sorice (Bethel, CT). It was her first goal of the season and the night as she added a second-half goal in the 69th minute.
Sorice, Western's leading scorer, notched her fourth goal of the season when she was avoided a Blue Jays defender and was left alone in the box.
Kelsey Chacho (Plainville, CT) scored her second goal of the season in the 20th minute and the Colonials went into intermission with a 3-0 advantage. She added an assist on Gustafson's final goal.
Sophomore Jillian Fernandez (Columbia, CT) made one save before yielding to freshman Victoria Casco (North Haven, CT) for the final 28 minutes.
Melissa Dodge (Watertown, CT) made for saves for USJ, now 2-3 on the season.
The Colonials, now 4-2, begin Little East Conference play on Saturday, September 19 when they travel to University of Massachusetts Dartmouth for a 2 pm match with the Corsairs.
NOTE: Western's home match with Clark University has been moved to Monday, September 21. The Colonials and Cougars face off at 6 pm at The WAC.
