Menta scores in the second half to lead Western to a 1-0 win at Western New England

| Box Score 2

SPRINGFIELD, MA (Sept. 5) – Host Western New England gave nine-time NCAA Division III Championship participant Western Connecticut State all it could handle on Thursday afternoon, but the Golden Bears came out on the wrong end of a 1-0 decision to the Colonials in non-conference women's soccer action at Suprenant Field. Both teams now have identical 2-1 records.

Sarah Menta scored what proved to the game-winning goal in the 69th minute when she picked up a loose ball above the penalty area, deked a defender and tucked a shot past WNE keeper Briana Kubik who was coming off her goal line inside the right post.

Just minutes before, Menta drilled a low shot from the right side but defender Danielle Savoie cleared the attempt off her goal line to keep WCSU off the scoreboard at the time.

Western New England's best scoring chance came in the 83rd minute when Chelsea Kuzio rifled a shot from the 18-yard line off the fingertips of Colonial keeper Alison Rettenmeier for a corner kick.

Both goalies made four saves on 11 shots faced each, with WCSU holding a 6-4 shots on goal edge. The Colonials' offensive pressure resulted in eight offside whistles.
