Discontinued Intercollegiate Athletics Program FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions on the recent Athletics decision

Why is now the right time for the University to make this decision?
The University has undergone multiple reviews of all programs over the past several years. The reviews and data analysis led to discussions between the President, Cabinet, and several campus administrators who impact the institution. The President's decision to implement this action is being taken now to help the University strategically position itself better, for both the short and long terms.

When will the decision go into effect, and how will it impact student-athletes in those programs?
Currently, 11 student-athletes are directly impacted by the decision. There may be an additional 8 who are still enrolled at the university.  As stated by the President, the decision is effective in May. For student-athletes who decide to transfer, we will help them enter the portal if they have not done so already.

Did the University consider waiting until the conclusion of the academic year rather than immediately?
The President determined that there was no need to wait on this decision and to be transparent.  Now is the time to make this notification to ensure all those affected by this decision have time to figure out what is in their best interest.

What factors went into the decision?
Several key areas were analyzed during the process, including gender equity, enrollment, full-time/part-time coaches, sport sponsorship trends at the regional and national levels, facilities, and program strengths/weaknesses. Discussions about the immediate, short-term, and long-range strategic plans of the University also weighed into this decision, with key emphasis on sustainability, economic viability, and overall quality experience.

Where will the resources from the discontinued program go?
Resources previously allocated to the program will be redistributed within the Department of Athletics.  Analysis of the redistribution is still ongoing.

Could these programs be funded and supported by alumni and/or fundraising efforts?
No. That is not the University's intent, since it would be a short-term solution unless the programs were to be endowed which would need to include the facility the pool is located in.

Were other sports considered for action?
The University thoroughly evaluates the entire university, which includes academic and non-academic programs, so yes, all aspects of the athletic department were evaluated and determined viable.

What is the transfer process, should WestConn student-athletes wish to compete at another institution?
Student-athletes who wish to transfer to another institution should contact the University's Athletic Compliance Officer, Dave Kingsley for assistance. Since WestConn competes as an NCAA Division III member, individuals have the option of completing a self-release form which can be sent to another Division III institution, or entering the transfer portal.  Future athletic eligibility as a transfer student-athlete will be determined by WestConn Athletics, based upon years of competition and academic standing when departing campus.

What will the University do to help impacted student-athletes?
In addition to the Department of Athletics & Recreation, several University offices are ready to provide services to all student-athletes impacted by the decision. The student affairs office can provide counseling and information through various departments. Additional information can be accessed from the financial aid office, advising, and/or the registrar for questions about future studies.

How does this decision affect the University's Title IX status?
The University continues to be committed to monitoring and improving equity across the board. The university will review and implement programs in consultation with the administration.

How will the University engage donors to honor their wishes regarding donations, endowments, or planned gifts to discontinued programs?
The University's Advancement Office will assist donors regarding affected gift agreements if any are in place.
