DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Senior
Jaelyn Moulton (Stafford Springs, Conn.) — WestConn's leading scorer this season with 22 points — extended her point streak with a penalty-stroke goal on Monday evening, but host UMass Dartmouth answered twice in the second half and won it in overtime, 3-2, at Cressy Field in the Little East Conference opener for both teams.
The Corsairs struck first when Brooke Lydon scored her first career goal at 21:19, but the Wolves answered before halftime as senior Madison Preston (Brookfield, Conn.) — the team's No. 2 scorer with 15 points on the campaign — knotted it at 25:56. WestConn then took the lead when Moulton buried a penalty stroke at 38:41, her eighth goal of the season, making it 2-1 heading into the fourth quarter.
Mass. Dartmouth wouldn't go away. Amelia Keeler tied it at 52:01 off an assist from Kelly Bates, and the two teams played to a stalemate through the rest of regulation before Carly Wang won it for the Corsairs in overtime at 65:27, assisted by Sam Gacioch.
WestConn outshot Mass. Dartmouth 17-11 for the contest and controlled the run of play for long stretches, with Moulton alone firing seven shots and senior Cassidy Nordmann (Bethel, Conn.) drawing three of the Wolves' five penalty corners. But freshman goalkeeper Brooklyn Testa (Danbury, Conn.) was outdueled by Mass. Dartmouth's Morgan Carr, who turned away nine shots to Testa's four saves.
The loss dropped WestConn to 5-6 overall and 0-1 in Little East Conference play, while Mass. Dartmouth improves to 3-7 and 2-0 in league play.
