NEW PALTZ, N.Y. —
Julia Stoliker (Red Hook, N.Y.) opened up the season with her 100th career serving ace in the Western Connecticut State University volleyball team's road loss (25-8, 19-25, 25-8, 25-15) to SUNY New Paltz on Tuesday. The Wolves moved to 0-1, while the Hawks improved to 1-0 overall. The senior's ace came in the first set for the team's seventh point of the match.
The Hawks set the pace early with a dominant 25-8 first-set victory, but the Wolves fought back in the second set to knot the score 1-1. Despite the hosts making a 6-3 run, a service error by the Hawks ignited a 17-2 scoring stretch for the Wolves. With first-year
Kyra Courtemanche (Hopewell Junction, N.Y. ) serving, WestConn rallied back for six-straight points, including a kill by Stoliker and a trio of aces for Courtemanche. Stoliker took the next serving spot and aided her team to four consecutive points to put the visitors up, 16-7.
The home team claimed the final two sets, despite the Wolves closing in at the end of the third set.
The Wolves remain on the road this weekend for the Vassar Tournament in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., along with Clark University and Rivier University. WestConn faces Clark for day one on Friday at 3 p.m.
