BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - Sophomore catcher
Victoria Wiatrak (Cromwell, Conn.) drove in a pair of runs in the opener before classmate outfielder
Sera DeBaggis (Mendon, Mass.) went 4-for-4 from the box in Game Two as the Western Connecticut State University softball squad won both games of a doubleheader against St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn on Friday afternoon. The Wolves notched 3-2 and 4-3 victories to complete the sweep.
The visitors fell behind early in the opener, 1-0, before rallying to snag a 3-1 advantage. Rookie
Madison Anderson (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) ripped an RBI single to center field in the second inning before Wiatrak blasted a two-run shot over the left field fence in the third to give WestConn the lead.Â
The Bears evened the count at 3-3 in the fourth when they scored runs on a triple to the gap followed by a double. However, the Wolves maintained their composure in the eighth. First-year player
Shaylee Bealey (Riverhead, N.Y.) reached on an error by the Bears outfield allowing a runner to score to seize the 4-3 lead. The hosts loaded the bases up in the bottom half of the frame. However, senior pitcher
Olivia Bordenaro (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) struck out a batter before getting the last player to pop up, earning WestConn the win.
It was a similar story in the nightcap as the hosts opened the game to jump ahead 1-0. WestConn answered in the fifth with a sacrifice fly to even the count at 1-1 before DeBaggis notched an RBI bunt single to lift WestConn to a 2-1 lead. She then stroked a single to the outfield in the seventh to plate another runner and widen the gap to 3-1. The Bears countered with a run in the bottom half before the final runner got tossed out at third base with a fielder's choice.
With the pair of victories, WestConn improved to 4-10 overall. St. Joseph's dropped to 7-9. The Wolves return to action when they travel to archrival Eastern Connecticut for a twin bill on Saturday at 1 p.m.
