Box Score DANBURY, Conn. — In a Little East Conference (LEC) matchup at home against Vermont State University Castleton, the Western Connecticut State University men's tennis team bested the Spartans 6-1 on the Westside Tennis Courts on Saturday. The Wolves improved to 5-10 overall and 2-3 in the league, while Castleton dropped to 2-7 and 0-3.
Castleton only had five players and forfeited No. 3 Doubles and No. 6 Singles. In Doubles action,
Alex Maldonado (Danbury, Conn.)Â and
Henry Gsell (Bridgewater, Conn.) at No. 3 nabbed the first win for WestConn and clinched the Doubles point with a 6-1 win, followed by
Aidan Burke (Wilton, Conn.) and
John Araujo (Bethel, Conn.)Â won 6-3 at No. 1.
Burke kicked off the solo action for the first point for the Wolves at No. 1, while Maldonado and
Axel Javier (Danbury, Conn.) earned wins at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. At No. 2 Singles,
Jose Zambrano (Danbury, Conn.) came back from a 1-5 deficit in the first-set tiebreak and won six straight points. He then shut out his opponent the rest of the way.Â
WestConn remains at home to host the University of Hartford on Monday with a 3:30 p.m. match.
"A convincing win today. Great job by the guys," head men's tennis coach Shawn Stillman said. "It's a busy week for us next week, so we'll enjoy this win today and then shift our focus."
