WestConn Men's Tennis Upends St. Joseph

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Junior John Araujo (Bethel, Conn.) won the clinching singles match to lead the visiting Western Connecticut State University Wolves to a 4-3 victory over the University of St. Joseph Blue Jays in men's tennis action this afternoon at Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex.  WestConn improves to 4-10 and the Blue Jays drop to 3-10.  The Wolves will host Little East Conference (LEC) rival Castleton next on Saturday at 1 p.m.

WestConn picked up a point at the start with a walkover at sixth singles but the Blue Jays earned the doubles point when Ryan Boucher and Adam Jara eked out a 7-6 win over Araujo and Wolves senior Aidan Burke (Wilton, Conn.) at first doubles.  St. Joseph took a 2-1 lead with a win at third singles but Burke and sophomore Alex Maldonado (Danbury, Conn.) won in straights sets at first and fourth singles, respectively, to give WestConn a 3-2 lead.  Araujo picked up the fourth point with a 6-2, 6-4 decision at fifth singles.

"We had a little help with the forfeited court at No. 6, but our guys earned this win," said WestConn Head Coach Shawn Stillman. "They played hard and were focused. We were 0-for-3 in tiebreakers though, so we need to do better in those situations."
