DANBURY, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University Wolves were beaten, 7-0, by the visiting Bridgewater State University Bears in Little East Conference (LEC) men's tennis action this afternoon at Westside Courts. WestConn falls to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in the LEC, while the Bears improve to 5-4 overall and 2-0 in the conference. The Wolves will visit league rival Rhode Island College next on Wednesday, April 15 at 3:30 p.m.
Bridgewater State narrowly secured the doubles point, as WestConn's sophomore tandem of
Henry Gsell (Bridgewater, Conn.) and
Alex Maldonado (Danbury, Conn.) posted a 6-3, win at the No. 3 position and the WestConn duo at second doubles, senior
Aidan Burke (Wilton, Conn.) and junior
John Araujo (Bethel, Conn.) fell just short in a 6-4 setback. In singles, Maldonado highlighted the Wolves' efforts, forcing his opponent into a third-set tiebreaker at the No. 4 spot. Maldonado won the first set, 6-4, and lost the second by the same score before losing, 10-8, to Bridgeewater State's Tom Ayson in the third.
"We knew that Bridgewater is the team to beat in the conference," said WestConn Head Coach Shawn Stillman. They are a formidable team. We came out strong in doubles and almost got the point, but we were not able to sustain the high level of play for singles."
