NEWBURGH, N.Y. - Senior
Aidan Burke (Wilton, Conn.) and junior
John Araujo (Bethel, Conn.) won in singles and as a doubles pair to lead the visiting Western Connecticut State University Wolves to a 6-1 victory over the Mount St. Mary College Knights in men's tennis action this afternoon. WestConn improves to 3-8 having won three of its last five matches, while the Knights fall to 5-7. The Wolves will host the Bridgewater State University Bears next in a Little East Conference (LEC) match on Saturday.
In doubles, WestConn took two of the three courts. Sophomores
Henry Gsell (Bridgewater, Conn.) and
Alex Maldonado (Danbury, Conn.) clinched the doubles point with a dominant 6-1 win at second doubles, after Araujo/Burke had earned a 6-4 win at the No. 2 spot. WestConn's
Jack Buck (New Fairfield, Conn.) and
Jose Zambrano (Danbury, Conn.) had built a 5-0 lead at the top of the ladder, but dropped the next 7 games to lose out on a doubles sweep for the visitors.
In singles, sophomore
Axel Javier (Danbury, Conn.) gave WestConn a 2-0 lead with a dominant win, 6-3, 6-0, at the bottom of the lineup. Mount St. Mary got its first point at third singles, but WestConn then rolled and won the remaining singles matches. Both Maldonado at fourth singles and Zambrano at second singles rallied back from behind after dropping their first set to win on a third-set tiebreaker. Burke #1 and Araujo #5 won in straight sets at first and fifth singles, respectively..
"It was a good win tonight," said WestConn Head Coach Shawn Stillman. "We had lost a handful of close matches lately, and our guys were able to turn it around and play strong. I'm happy for them, they earned this win."
