DANBURY, Conn. - Senior attackman
Tristan McMahon (Farmingville, N.Y.) had two goals and three assists to lead the Western Connecticut State University Wolves to a 11-9 victory over the visiting Massachusetts Maritime Academy Buccaneers in the Little East Conference (LEC) men's lacrosse opener for both teams this afternoon at Westside Stadium. WestConn improves to 6-3 overall with its second victory in a row, while the Buccaneers fall to 4-2 with their first loss in three games. The Wolves will visit Montclair State next on Thursday at 4 p.m.
Freshman
Thomas Keegan (Lake Grove, N.Y.) had a goal and an assist to help WestConn take a 3-1 lead after one quarter. Chilton Cabot scored a man-up goal in the first minute of the second frame, but the Wolves rattled off four of the next five goals to lead 7-3 with 32 seconds left before the break. Alex Burbank (Newtown, Conn.) each had a goal and an assist in the second quarter. Joe Vricella made it a 7-4 game at halftime with an unassisted goal at the 11-second mark.
Camden Stern and Cabot scored back-to-back for the Buccaneers to start the third quarter and pull the visitors to within a goal at 7-6 with 11 minutes on the clock. The teams traded goals over the next five minutes until junior attackman
Cody Suhr (Holbrook, N.Y.) scored twice in 15 seconds to push WestConn's lead up to 10-7 at the final break. Neither team could find the next for over 11 minutes into the fourth quarter before Quinn Mucha scored for Massachusetts Maritime with 3:32 remaining in the game. McMahon answered just 19 seconds later but Stern fed Ryan McDonough for the ninth Buccaneers goal with 1:13 on the clock. Both teams turned the ball over after the final faceoff and Daniel Kane hit the post for Massachusetts Maritime with 17 seconds left before time ran out.
WestConn outshot the Buccaneers, 45-29, and forced 27 turnovers while committing 21. McMahon added two ground balls and three caused turnovers to his five points, while Keegan finished with two goals and two assists with four ground balls, and freshman

Jake Kelly (Bethpage, N.Y.) totaled eight saves and a pair of ground balls. Stern paced the Massachusetts Maritime offense with two goals and an assist and Cole Jenkins won 17 of 23 faceoffs and picked up a game-high 10 ground balls for the Buccaneers.
