MELBOURNE, Fla. — Despite being down 6-1 after the fourth inning,
Giulia Scibilia's (Carle Place, N.Y.) single ignited a six-run seventh inning rally for the Western Connecticut State University softball team, but the Wolves fell 9-8 in the eighth against St. Norbert College on Wednesday. WestConn dropped a 9-0 game one contest earlier in the day to Carleton College at the Space Coast Complex. The Wolves moved to 2-6 on the season, while Carleton improved to 5-2 and St. Norbert improved to 6-5 overall.
Scibilia opened the game against St. Norbert with a run to put the Wolves up, 1-0, in the top of the first frame. The first-year singled to left field, but an error the outfielder gave her the advantage to take another bag.
Sera DeBaggis' (Mendon, Mass.) sacrifice bunt put Scibilia on third, followed by another successful sac bunt by
Kendall Allen (Naugatuck, Conn.), which allowed her to go home.
Elly Kirst evened the score at the bottom of the first inning with a sac bunt by the Green Knights. St. Norbert scored five times across the second and fourth, including a base-clearing triple by Grendel Sprong in the fourth.
Scibillia singled to left field in the seventh, followed by an error put her on second and sent home
Deanna Reimo (Holtsville, N.Y.) and
Madison Anderson (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) to cut the deficit in half. At the next at bat, DeBaggis reached first on error by second base before heading to second on the errant throw, which allowed Scibillia to cross the plate. Allen's deep single up the middle gave time for DeBaggis to score.
Angelina Avila's (Hicksville, N.Y.) two-RBI single brought in pinch runners
Alyvia Hogg (Hamden, Conn.) and
Jaycee Filancia (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) to give the Wolves the 7-6 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Aiva Champeau scored the game-tying run after a passed ball gave her third base. However, WestConn didn't let up as
Finley Burke (Dallas, Texas) gave the visitors the lead again off of
Julia Valukis' (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) single through the left side. In the bottom of the eighth, Magdeline Hanmann scored off an error by third base to knot the game at eight apiece, before Ava Engwall's single through the right side gave the Green Knights a walkoff run.
In the opening game for the Wolves, Carleton scored nine across the second, sixth and seventh innings, while WestConn only stranded four batters.
WestConn closes out its spring break trip with a doubleheader against Hamilton College, starting at 10 a.m. on Friday.
