WestConn Softball Drops Doubleheader with Hamilton to Close Out Florida Trip

MELBOURNE, Fla. — On the final day in Florida, the Western Connecticut State University softball team fell (11-4, 11-2) to Hamilton College in a doubleheader at the Space Coast Complex on Friday.  The Wolves moved to 2-8 on the season, while the Continentals improved to 5-5 overall.

In game one, Hamilton scored five unanswered runs through the opening two innings before Giulia Scibilia's (Carle Place, N.Y.) single down the right field line to allow pinch runner Caitlin Milks (Sandy Hook, Conn.) to score and put the Wolves on the board in the third. Hamilton scored four more times in the fourth.

Angelina Avila (Hicksville, N.Y.) reached first base off an error by shortstop and pinch runner Lexi Winkler (Longmeadow, Mass.) added another run for WestConn in the top of the fourth. On the next play, Francesca Foster (Mystic, Conn.) stole home, followed by a sacrifice fly by Victoria Wiatrak (Cromwell, Conn. ) to bring Avila home.

In the first inning of game two, Hamilton scored three times, but Serenity Ortega's (Riverside, Calif.) run narrowed the gap to two off Alexis Resto's (Shelton, Conn.) single to right field in the second. After being down 5-2 in the fourth with two outs on the board and bases loaded, Julia Valukis' (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) RBI single to right field brought Foster back home.

Through the fifth and sixth innings, Hamilton scored six more runs.

WestConn returns home for a Little East Conference doubleheader with the University of Vermont Castleton on Westside Softball Field at noon on Saturday, March 28.
